When I asked her why, she indicated that she's looking for work and doesn't want anyone to access her social media information. Although I'm aware that potential employers are accessing social media information for character-based insights, Amy (not her real name), has nothing to worry about. From my perspective, she's one of the "cleanest" people I know. If she has any skeletons in her closet, it's probably because someone painted them on her wall. However, there are many people that offer the world every dark corner of their existence, clueless that their Internet history will haunt them forever.

I hear people talk about "losing" their privacy. What they don't seem to understand is that it's already lost. A plethora of search engines and the immediate availability of even our most sacred information can leave us reeling. If you're older, like I am, you're probably thankful that you're "life history" wasn't recorded.
If you haven't become a bit wiser with time, it's best that you buckle in for a bumpy ride. Life isn't fair, and neither are some of the people searching your profiles. In fact, it was completely irrelevant. He wasn't interested in offering advice or clarification, he was only interested in proving that he was right. So many people "talk" (or text, or type!) without ever listening to what was said in the first place. Their position is restrictive, and serves no purpose other than to support an agenda, bandage an insecurity, or reinforce ignorance.

Those that are always "right" generally prove themselves to be wrong, and without wisdom. At the very least, they'll discourage additional feedback. They'd do much better if they'd shut their yap flap!

Leaders listen more than they talk. Maxwell

It took me a while to appreciate the wisdom of that statement. In fact, I'm still working on it. For a long, long time, I was always the "nice" guy. I never wanted to disappoint anyone. Perhaps it was how I was raised or a lack of overall confidence, but I felt like everyone should have free access to my schedule. I couldn't say "no" and it created a lot of problems. I was offering my professional services for a fraction of what they were worth, changing my plans to accommodate someone's irresponsibility, or just plain wasting my time watching some stupid television show. What I've lost, I can never get back. Ever. It's the same for you.

I'm still a nice guy, but I have to maximize the time that I have left. I'm no longer twenty years old with "forever" on my mind. Think of it like this. What you offer, the price you charge, when you volunteer or don't volunteer, the overall quality of your life - all come with a value stamp. Some will pass on the offer because they think it's too much. Others will snatch it from the rack and encourage their friends to rush the stock. Ok, so you might benefit a little, but was it really worth the time and energy invested? Are you happy with the outcome, or are you angry with yourself because you did it again?

I received a text this morning. A friend of a friend needs some business advice and wants to "pick my brain" a bit. The first question? You guessed it - Mr. Gamble, will it cost me anything? A few years ago I would've changed my schedule, jumped in my car, and sacrificed an hour or two of my time to make his life a bit better. Today, I'm gonna charge a few bucks. In fact, I'm gonna charge several.

It's not a matter of greed and it's certainly not a matter of survival. It's a matter of value. I've worked HARD for everything that I have. Everything. Very few could comprehend the pain, sacrifice, mental toll, and discipline required. In fact, I'm still bleeding as I climb the mountain! I believe in what I have to offer, I'm comfortable with ME, and I've learned, painfully, that people will exploit an exposed or perceived weakness. In fact, some will draw on your last breath, IF you let them.

Yes, do some things for free that bring a smile to someone's face or light a darkened soul. It's important to give and remain humble. Beyond that, however, determine the value of who you are and what you have to offer - and stick to it. You're worth it. And your time? It's priceless!

A Coaster Called LIFE!

I remember my first roller coaster ride vividly. It was August 16, 1977 (The day Elvis died). The youth bus pulled into Cedar Point Amusement Park; Sandusky, Ohio. I was 15yrs. old, full of vinegar, and determined to be the "toughest" of the bunch when it came to scary rides.

Pale in comparison to what they offer today, The Blue Streak was the king of the coaster's, the place where all young men proved their manly-wannabe-ness!. The group I was in waited for about two hours - I pushed, pulled, and shoved to get to the front of the line. My 130 pound, skinny frame eventually slithered its way into the very first seat. I was born for this, or so I thought. I jumped in the seat, locked the safety bar, and waited for the ride. It was my first time on anything fast, ever. Nothing bothers me! Hey, I'm not cocky, I'm confident!

Up we go; click, click, click. Still climbing; click, click, click. And then BAM! That thing took off like a bat out of hell. I was terrified. I wasn't sure what was going to come out of what end, but I knew the tap was on. I thought I was dying or at least on my way. I didn't hear anything and certainly couldn't see anything , especially after the first "death drop". My heart was pumping, and all I could utter in the faintest whisper, because my lips were flapping in the wind and trying to form vowels, was "Help me! Help me! Help me! Each cry was softer. I was on the edge of consciousness and could only see bright lights! I aint' gonna make it. Lawdy, Lawdy, Lawdy, Miss Clawdy, I see Jesus!

Well I did make it. A few barf bags (B-bags), some ice water, and some attention from a young female saved my life! I think she did, really. Well, at least I told her she did!

I haven't been to Cedar Point in decades, but I still ride a coaster every now and then - a coaster called LIFE. Sometimes I don't know if I'll make it, but I always do. I just hang on until the ride is over. So can you!

Nuts & Bolts Character Test

I can't remember when, where, or why, but I read the story a long time ago, probably in High School, 1970's. The lesson has always stuck with me.

A Hardware Store owner (what happened to those?) is looking to hire a young man for counter help. A few young men, at different times, are escorted to a storage room for their "interview". Each is offered three large cans - one is full of nuts, one is full of bolts, and the other is empty. The primary objective is to connect the nuts and bolts and place them in the third can. That's it - all day! Each applicant has been told that they can leave at any time.

The owner has hidden a $20 bill in the middle of the bolt can. I'm reminded of those that can rob another of their gift, or the simple joy of competition, because of their own insecurities or a need need to live vicariously through someone else. I'm speaking of those that begin to take the eventual outcome of an event personally - those that jump, holler, and scream about winning a game, but aren't playing in it. We've all seen them - they speak of imaginary cuts & bruises as if they've paid some sacrificial price. Ah, but they haven't. I call them the unwelcome shadows!

A Champion wins before he or she ever hits the platform. The biggest battles are often the most silent ones, those that are hidden deep behind a wrinkled forehead and tired eyes. Intense discipline, drive, and commitment lie well within the heart, and soul, of us all. Rarely, however, is the passion needed to push beyond obstacles manufactured by someone else.

If someone chooses to compete, they also choose to win or lose. That decision is theirs and should be theirs alone. If you're called to coach, then coach. However, do it for a cause bigger than your own. If you can't do that, and somehow want or need the glory, suit up and take the field. Otherwise, sit down, be quiet, and eat your popcorn.

Didn't know, don't care!

It was certainly an interesting conversation. Well, sort of. I was sitting across the table from a woman, enjoying lunch, and an introduction of sorts. She was explaining to me what she did and I had an opportunity to explain what I do. In walks a man with a fancy suit, some significant gold, and an attitude that was much bigger than he is. He sat at the table, didn't introduce himself, and began to comment on a conversation that he wasn't invited to. Not one to ignore rudeness, I quickly stopped talking, extended my hand, and introduced myself. I'm Jake, who are you? I'm Tom. What do you do, Tom? I'm the chief janitor - I take out the trash. Now, I have a good sense of humor, but I didn't think he was funny- not even close. In fact, that's a lot of first round sarcasm!

I continued to probe a bit, despite his obvious narcissism. I wasn't getting anywhere. Stick and move, stick and move. That was his pattern. It was obvious that he liked to toy with people. Sorry, dude - wrong guy! I'm of the opinion that a title and the accolades attached to it, for the most part, don't mean squat. I'm interested in an individuals character and who they really are. Talk is cheap, pal!

I would eventually find out that the individual I was speaking with was the CEO of the company. I also discovered, that among the approximate 6.5 BILLION people in the world, he EXPECTED me to know how important he is (He's a legend in his own mind!). Well, I didn't and still don't. I'm not even remotely interested!

Success, in my world, extends far beyond a fancy suit and a lot of money. I'm thinking of the movie, "Pretty Woman, where Julia Roberts walks into a clothing boutique only to be ignored. She had all the resources she needed to purchase anything in the store. However, the ignorance of a foolish salesperson destroyed the moment. Communication is a lot like that. Be careful who you're talking to and think about your approach. If you don't, you might just miss out on a great deal!

I tamed the BEAST!

Do you gamble a lot? Not really, but I'd be beyond wealthy if I had a dime for every time I've heard that statement! It's always funny to me - everyone thinks they're the first one to say it! If you haven't guessed by now, my last name is Gamble!

Anyhow, yesterday I enjoyed a business lunch at the Hoosier Park Racing Casino in Anderson, Indiana. The buffet was awesome, as was the meeting. Afterwards, I got adventurous and decided that I'd attempt my fate with the one-armed bandit. I made it to the machines like I knew what I was doing. I committed to a sum total of $5.00. I lost $5.00 during my last outing, so I was even more determined this time!
I deposited $5.00 and expected a large number of plays. I only got three! I was playing the $2 slot machines instead of the 2 cent slots machines! Why didn't they tell me there was a difference! Damn it!

Off to the 2 cent slots. I had $13 left in my wallet, but I certainly wasn't going to lose THAT much. I hesitated, but then decided to insert three $1 bills. I pulled the bandits arm - nothing. Another pull - nothing. Another pull and an unfamiliar sound - ding! ding! ding! ding! I had hit it big, but didn't know what was happening - I thought there was something wrong with the machine! The guy next to me saw the troubled look on my face and leaned over. Hey buddy, you're up! About $52 dollars to be exact. Then it got real interesting. I wanted to quit, but I didn't know how. I decided that I'd continue to play until someone "smarter" walked by. I did have to look like I knew something. Man pride! Loss, loss, loss. $52, $45, $40. Hey people, I finally thought - I don't know what I'm doing!! Hey dummy, we know! I finally found the Cash Out button. Duh! After that, I didn't know how to trade my ticket for cash. To save face, I left the bandit and approached the casino staff. What do I do with this? Sir, cash it out! How do I do that? Over there! Over where? A funny staff look (Seriously!?) I finally get to the payout machine and don't know how to work that either! I was saved by the kind words of yet another gambling patron!

I won! $30.02 on an $8.00 investment! Do I gamble much! Nope, but I did - once, and I won BIG! Ah, the stories that I'll tell my grand kids!

End of story!

I faced an interesting situation recently. No less that three people initiated contact with me, scheduled an appointment, and then backed out for a variety of reasons - all at the very last minute. I was quite irritated. In fact, I was pissed. It's not that I can't understand a last-minute crisis or even a change in schedule. Life happens. I'm talking about the same people who have no regard for common courtesy. Whenever a pattern develops and irresponsibility becomes the norm, it MUST be addressed. From my perspective, there are only three options: 1) Ignore it 2) Accept it 3) Move on. I usually choose the latter, and here's why.

Accountability and consistency are important things, especially in business. In fact, they're critical elements of trust - the foundation of all good agreements/relationships. If an individual has issues with follow through, why would they be counted on at game time?

Maya Angelou said, "If someone shows you who they are, believe them"!

There's a lot of wisdom in that statement! I think that we're all called to offer the best of ourselves to the world. However, I also believe that we should be respected and valued by others. That value should also be extended to our time. If we're not valued, we're manipulated, and whenever that happens, in business or in life, it's time to move on! End of story.

It's never too late

To WELCOME A NEW DAY WITH A BETTER ATTITUDE!

Whitney Houston R.I.P!

Whitney Houston has now joined the ranks of Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, Jimi Hendrix, Michael Jackson, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and countless others - GONE TOO SOON. Those are the first words that came to mind.

Dead, at 48. When you're "young", 48 seems old. However, when you've made it, or in my case, exceeded it by a year or two, you realize just how young 48 really is. Dead, at 48. Gone forever. Unbelievable!

I never knew Whitney personally, nor did I ever have the opportunity to meet her. I first "met" her on the cover of a vinyl LP. She was tall, slender, and wearing a bathing suit. I remember looking at that cover for a long time. She was stunning. In fact, I still have that image firmly etched in the ol' mind! And then there was that voice; so perfect, so flawless. Whitney brought both beauty and talent to the table - all wrapped in a magical stage/screen presence.

An ugly downward spiral. Drugs, an abusive relationship, problems with her voice, loneliness, depression? Many will speculate as to "why" she's gone. If fact, I can hear her music in the living room. A television station is obviously profiling the latest "Big Story". The sad thing about it? Only those close to Whitney REALLY know the details.

If her death follows an established pattern, the remainder of 2012 and 2013 will be two of the best years she's had in a long, long time. I'm sure that people are buying her music as I type. Books will suddenly appear, the tabloids will run crazy, and the most popular news channels will detail her loss for a day or two. The radio stations, producers, and artists that ignored her during the lowest points of her career will now offer their respect on screen and in song. Some shows like "Glee" will probably resurrect a large portion of her musical portfolio. And if we get really lucky, we might even get to hear Dr. Phil talk about it (sarcasm).

Whitney is gone, but there are thousands of hopefuls that will challenge her fate. "American Idol". "The X-Factor", The Voice" - people starving for Whitney's level of fame and fortune. What's most unfortunate is that some will find it, and the emptiness goes with it. I'm convinced that we'll see more "young" lives snuffed out in the years to come. That's sad, very sad.

Regardless of whether you liked Whitney or not, her life had value. I can't help but think of her daughter or her family. Do they even remotely car about "The" Whitney Houston? Probably not - I'm sure that they grieve the loss of a daughter, a mother, a friend - just like the rest of us would.

Whitney, I'll pull some of your music and listen to it. It'll bring back fond memories. And hey, save a spot for me, right next to you, in Heaven's choir!

You'll be missed. R.I.P!

Attention college students!

I'm a College Professor, specializing in business. From a first look, you'd probably never imagine that. In fact, some people tell me that I look more like a professional wrestler. I'm a big man. Some might even doubt that I'm smart, whatever that ridiculous statement means. Just what is smart? Does it mean that you know more about one topic than I do? Does in mean that you did better on the last exam or paper than your classmates? Does it mean that your G.P.A is higher than the national average? Ok, so you maybe you tested superior on the last Geometry exam. Hey, maybe you can even quote the latest digital dictionary. So what. Again, what does smart mean?

I was asked last evening if I'd speak to a college freshman about his academic success. I think he's doing well during his first year, but he sees it differently. He wants to be perfect and have the highest G.P.A. He's convinced, as are thousands and thousands across the country, that a 4.0 G.P.A is his ticket to success. Sorry, but for the most part, it doesn't matter. It's not even close. Anyone that's been involved with Higher Education, for more than a day, will recognize that some colleges and universities are nothing more than paper mills. The lack of rigor is a joke. College, at least sometimes, is nothing more than a housing unit for high-paying customers. Keep the customer happy to maintain the cash-flow. Don't ask too much, don't expect too much, don't "harp" on anyone. And remember, never use a red pen or pencil to grade - that's offensive and might hurt someones feelings! Now Mr. Professor man, you're being too harsh. Am I?

Many college students across the country are graduating with degrees, but they can't spell, can't write, and certainly can't communicate a topic or support an opinion effectively. It's sad, but true - many are getting a degree, but there's no substance behind it!

My recommendation is this. And I'm speaking from first-hand experience! I SUCKED as a college student, at least initially - playing pool, chasing women, and partying didn't get the job done! These days, I'm blessed, but it didn't come easy. My progress has been built, largely on the mistakes of my past and the lessons I've learned, and am still learning. I'm also a voracious reader and that hasn't hurt! In fact, it's made a HUGE difference in my life! I'm not bragging, I'm just stating the facts - and I'm walking the talk! Here is what I KNOW!

If you're in college, forget about the G.P.A. Study to LEARN, but never to manipulate an outcome. If you pursue in-depth knowledge, the grades will come; i.e., worry about your preparation, not the exam score.
I hear some students say that they suffer from test anxiety. In many cases, that's nonsense and/or a poor excuse. Test anxiety is generally based in a lack of preparation. You should begin to prepare for an exam as soon as you receive the associated date, not the night before, and certainly not minutes before. Rote memory does nothing. And the attempted cheating I've seen? We won't even go there!
Ok, so you passed the exam. Better yet, you got over on me and the establishment. Not really! Why? If you don't know that answer, you will - eventually!

Anyone that MASTERS a topic will do well on an exam, any exam. Maybe they won't get 100%, but they'll be happy with the outcome. Keep this in mind: The results of an exam are only a reflection of what you know about, and how you tested, on THAT exam. The next one could be much, much better! You don't think so? I double-dare you to try me!

Here's the key: Pay attention to your syllabus! Chart the exam dates and record the chapters to be read. (By the way, I tell me students to read the entire book. Two books in the class? Read both! Every word, every chapter. You won't understand it the first time? Read it again, and again, and again, and again. Get my drift? And no, I am not kidding!) If reading isn't your thing, get a tutor, listen to audio books, or watch something that helps you better understand the material (NOT JERSEY SHORE!) Prepare in advance!

Get SERIOUS about who you are and what you plan to offer this world. Commit to excellence. Get in there an LEARN it, and go-deep with your knowledge. Learn as much as you possibly can and then take it up a notch! and then another! and then another! If I can do it, anyone can. Today matter's - get to it! Your future depends on it!

As a side note, I'd encourage you to read every book that Dr. Ben Carson has written. His story is truly inspiring - from the "dumb" kid to a world-renowned brain surgeon. Enough said! http://carsonscholars.org

Don't go there!

Organizational culture is a powerful entity. In fact, it can destroy the reputation of a company quickly, and thoroughly, especially in the digital age.

In early 2011, I was offered an educator's slot that would enhance the personal and professional development of its participants. However, the slot was conditional, based on paid-for enrollment and I knew that. I saw it as an opportunity to promote my "brand" and prepared accordingly. Unfortunately, the six-week session never happened and I moved on, intellectual capital intact. It wasn't that hard to do. After all,
I have a growth mentality and knew that my time wasn't wasted - I now had some additional firepower for my portfolio arsenal.

Forward to late 2011. I'm contacted by the same entity. Would I prep two new modules? I discuss the first modules that were prepared for early 2011 and was informed that the organization was "holding off" because of pressure from a local competitor. I think that's a dangerous and fearful approach, but "whatever". I agree to prep two new modules for early 2012.

I was lied to. I won't go into the details, but I was lied to. Blatantly. I understand, unfortunately, that deception happens in business. As the saying goes, "don't take it personal". However, I expect more from the people I do business with. It seems like character and integrity, even decency and common courtesy, have flown out the window. I'll offer my "new" presentations soon. After that, never again with the same entity.

Deception "drops from the top". Regardless of where it's positioned in the organization, it's a sign of deeper and darker issues. When you see deception, or experience it, run for the hills! People do what they do, consistently, because it works - dishonesty runs deep, and once developed, it will always do more harm than good. It's a pattern, and an ugly one. I'm sure that I'm not the first person to face deception, and I certainly won't be the last. However, a lesson was learned, or I'll say, reinforced.

Surround yourself with good things and good people. Money isn't worth the longevity of pain and misery. Stand firm in the power of character and integrity, and make wise choices. As the saying goes, "Five years from now, you'll be the same person you are today, except for the people you associate with and the books you read?. (Unknown). Watch for the darkness and move quickly to the light! Be smart, be good, and do right by others! The quality of your life, and legacy, depends on it!

The journey box

Some people never learn anything because they understand everything too soon ~ Alexander Pope

I opened my desk calendar to read the above statement. How true it is! As a College Professor, I see it often (thankfully, not always!) A young adult, or even a seasoned veteran, who enters a classroom, pays no attention, doesn't read, or is far too busy texting. No apparent need for knowledge there! I've seen it in a family member - he's been there, done that, and got the T-shirt. He'll tell you that he knows everything about EVERYTHING. I've seen in a Sunday School teacher. He firmly stated that his class was the only class that offered biblical truth. His self-proclaimed "expertise" expanded into business, music, relationship, etc. He was convinced that he was the only one that was ever right. And then there's the Jakester, as I'm sometimes affectionately known. In my early 20's, and if I'm honest, we'll into my 30's, I knew everything as well. I thought I had the Universe, and everyone in it, figured out! No more of that nonsense!

Whenever we close our minds to experience or knowledge, we close the lid on the journey box. At almost 50, I'm now convinced that I know very little. Sure, I have an advanced college degree, have taught over twenty course titles at the university level, am well versed in the challenges of life, have CONTRIBUTED to the success of my current (and last!) marriage, and have three kids that are growing into fine adults. However, behind all of the perpetual accolades is the knowledge that life and all it has to offer is far beyond my current understanding or control. There is always something to learn and I've embraced the challenge.
Care to join me?

They call that customer service?

Yesterday was certainly an interesting one. A long list of options, some with different numbers or a reference to their ineffective website - which, interestingly enough, refers you back to the first number you called!
3. Call the number again and the cycle repeats - I even pushed different options. Nothing!
5. Life is short, but I'm stubborn and determined!
6. A human! Yippee!!
7. How can I help you Mr. Gamble? Oops, sorry - I can't. Let me transfer you.
8. Repeat last scenario 3-4 times.
9. I'm sorry Mr. Gamble, but we'll have to get back to you.
10. No, I'm sorry - there is no supervisor available. I can forward to you her voicemail.
11. Tone of voice(s) indicates that Mr. Gamble is being much more persistent than the "average" caller. In fact, he's becoming a bother!
12. No, I'm sorry - we can't offer last names (for follow-up) and certainly can't (won't) transfer you to a "live" supervisor - My bad! I'm confused and thought I was seeing a pattern - please, for the Love of God, just transfer me one more time!
13. Time runs into my busy schedule. Voicemail left. Nothing!

Ok, you say - it can't be that bad. Oh, but it was. I do understand that it's a "large" bureaucratic office (should that make a difference?), but my point is this. Customer service is critical in today's economy. In fact, it's recognized that the customer now determines most business models. Well, except for the Government!

Automated answering services can be effective, but only if it's recognized that a "human" can eventually be reached. Once a "human" is reached, they should be courteous, knowledgeable, and respectful of your situation; i.e., HELPFUL! They should be there to assist, not derail, ignore, or falsely pacify.

Whether we like it or not, social media and the voice of the customer rules. Customers that aren't satisfied with the final outcome will take their business elsewhere. In those cases, an unsatisfied customer is a lost customer and it's very difficult, if not impossible, to get them back. At the very least, they'll become frustrated, lose faith in the integrity of your process, question your motives, and profile their experience on a BLOG!

Discouraged or defeated?

Discouragement will come, even to the greatest of the great. Life imposes challenges on all of us. Whether it's the loss of a job, health issues, a troubled relationship, or inevitable defeat, the time will come when we're all backed against a wall and forced to wonder if we'll get through it. Those days will challenge the essence of our character, and sometimes, the depth of our soul. Discouragement can lead to despair and a perceived loss of personal value. It also taints our perspective and can destroy our mindset. It's the great immobilizer.

Here's today's challenge: Take a shower, put on the cologne or perfume, get dressed, take a deep breath, throw the shoulders back, check your attitude, and then take a step - towards something better. As long as well dwell on our discouragement, nothing will ever change. Discouragement is something that can impact us, but not something that we have to abide by. We do have a choice. I am sometimes discouraged, but NEVER defeated. I hope you feel the same way!

Post-it Note Time Management

Successful people understand the importance of setting goals and staying committed to the journey. However, whether it's Facebook, a ringing smart phone, or the Superbowl (Yeah, Eli!), the distractions of life are many.

Here's a simple exercise that will help you move forward and keep you accountable. In fact, it's quite the eye-opener!

The next time that you set a goal, especially a very important one, give yourself a deadline and determine the actual days until the event takes place. There are websites that can help you with that. My favorite is http://www.jarusa.com/daysuntil.htm

Take a Post-it Note and label it with an event title. After that, it's three simple steps:

1. You will indicate your calendar start date and change it every day.

2. You will indicate the current "Day" and consistently increase the count.

3. You will indicate the days remaining, beginning with the FINAL number, and count backwards each day.

Example: 2/6/12 - 2/16/12 (10 Days)

"New Goal" = 2/6/12 - D1 - 10

Day 3 = 2/8/12 - D3-8

Day 6 = 2/11/12 - D6 - 5

Put the Post-it NOTE where you can change it, first thing, every morning. This is a POWERFUL exercise. Not only will it help you stay focused - it's a stark reminder of how quickly each day passes! Best wishes!

The Green Monster!

Money rules the world. Ethics, values, and passion are critical, but money does rule our world, at least that's what I think - especially in business. That's very unfortunate. It can turn an honest man into a dishonest one. It causes war, destroys relationships, promotes deception, encourages greed, and is often an addiction that's stronger than the most dangerous drug. Money, however, can certainly provide opportunity and improve the quality of life. It can heal the sick and comfort the poor. It allows us to travel, eat well (sometimes too well!), and entertain ourselves. The list of positive and negative attributes goes on and on.

For those that are controlled by the Green Monster, I have a solution. Control it, call the shots, regardless of how much or how little you have! Otherwise, you'll always be a victim to its power. Hey Jake, that's just stupid. Money is too hard to come by. I agree. Money is hard to come by, but there's lots of it out there. We just have to figure out how to get it, the right way, and giving is the best way to receive. It's called the law of reciprocity and it works, but you have to give freely, with no expectation of return.

I was at the Credit Union yesterday, depositing a business check. As I turned to leave, I noticed a Girl Scout display - "Cookies for sale!" The little girl behind the table appeared to be bored, very bored. It was obvious that she hadn't sold many, at least that's what the display led me to believe. I had ten bucks in my hands, two fives. I love Girl Scout cookies (the Somoas are my absolute favorite), but I had to pass. I'm doing well on my diet and knew that I would eat the ENTIRE box before I even hit my driveway!

Anyhow (that damned bird), I approached the young girl at the table, indicated that I didn't want any cookies, and gave her $5.00. She seemed very surprised. So was her mother or her Scout Leader. I informed that little girl that it was her "tip" for working hard all day. Her face lit up like a Christmas Tree - priceless!

I'm not bragging about my gift. It's only $5.00 and it doesn't mean much to me. However, there was a time in my life that I wouldn't have given $5.00 to anyone, regardless of their circumstance. Money absolutely controlled me. I didn't give it away because I thought that it would NEVER return. I held it as close to me as a mother does her newborn child, and it almost destroyed me. I was consumed by it.

Anything that we can't let go of owns us. Money is the same way. There is a freedom that comes from releasing something that has power over us. The $5.00 that I gave freely yesterday will return. I don't know when or how, but it will come back. It always does, tenfold!

The next time that money owns you, give some of it away. Maybe it's $50,000. Perhaps it's $1.00. It doesn't matter. Toss it in the direction of someone that can enjoy it, or benefit from it, and watch the magic happen.

Go Colt's!

Indianapolis, IN., home of the 2012 SuperBowl, is just a little over an hours drive from my home. Yesterday, I mentioned to my Facebook friends that I really had no interest in the chaos of the downtown Indianapolis weekend. One of the comments, in particular, suggested that I was somewhat antisocial. Not at all. I'm sure there are some great people visiting the awesome city that's Indianapolis - home, also, of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I know that many celebrities are in town, and that the network coverage spans virtually every channel - even the Today Show (a personal favorite), has been airing its show from the SuperBowl location. Bands are entertaining people in the streets, vendors are selling awesome merchandise, the food in Indy is awesome, and the weather in our area has been in the low 50's for days. Perfect! So why not SuperBowl weekend? The diagnosis is simple - I had other things to do that were more pressing. Sure, I could put everything on the back burner and take off for the weekend, but that puts me about 2 -3 days behind my goals and/or professional responsibilities. Not to mention that I've heard of some parking issues, street closings, traffic re-routing, and your always present, "idiots". I have no doubt that the IPD would keep me and my family safe, but when you have goals to accomplish, and deadlines to do so, you must prioritize. I'm just not willing to sacrifice that kind of time.

It's important to control your environment and not let it control you. Successful people don't manage time, they execute it. I love football, and will certainly watch the SuperBowl tomorrow evening. However, I'm sure that what I'll miss in downtown Indy will be captured on a DVD, soon to be available in all Indiana retail stores. I'm really not missing much. It's all about perspective. Go Colt's!

The Myth of Perfection

Fortunately, I'm able to work with a large number of individuals. Whether it's a student or a higher-profile client, I always tell them the same thing - you'll never be perfect, so quit trying. However, I do tell them to strive for excellence, in all things. It's my opinion that you can certainly get THERE! However, few make it. It requires time, energy and sacrifice. It also requires discipline, rigor, and a commitment to personal growth. Excelling in anything requires the best of us, but we have to be willing to pay the price. Some think the cost is way too high. In his sermon,he was referring to people who manufacture their persona to accommodate everyonearound them, an individual who hides behind a cloud of deceit. That samepastor was later forced from the church for embezzlement and sexual misconduct! For years, he had stood behind the pulpit, portraying himself as something hewasn't. The darkness of that situation still resonates with people in mycommunity. It still resonates with me! He failed to be authentic and the damagewas done. Please note - this isn't an article about a church, religion, orjudgment. It's a simple observation - leaders need to get "real!"

The challenges to be authentic are immense. They include, but are not limitedto - peer pressure, control, image, power, societal expectations, diversity.and fear. Fear of how we'll be treated if we don't do what everyone expects, say what they want to hear, like what they like, drive what they drive, wearwhat they wear, or live where they live. Sometimes our greatest fear isthat if we're not somehow superior, we're vulnerable. Control and power carrytheir own dangers - we've all seen people who live for the sole purposeof position and authority. They'll certainly never reveal any weakness or senseof humanity. It's disturbing! The Chameleons are everywhere!

I believe that the call of a leader is to be authentic. Not that we're perfect, but that we represent the very best of who we are and what we have to offer.People are watching us and it's our responsibility to lead, by example. Hey,it's not like we can hide our faults - they've surely seen them! It's aboutbeing honest with ourselves and others. It's about character that can stand thetest of time, an integrity that minimizes the distance between our life and ourlips. And yes, it's even about caring - extending and hand, or a heart, asneeded and appropriate. Do the people really know YOU, or have your presented afacade? Do you live the TRUTH of life and circumstance? The business ofbusiness is people - "Real" people! Get there!

Winning from the inside out!

I was at the gym yesterday and was questioned about my notable weight-loss. I was also asked about a competition I'll be in come April, 2012. "Are you afraid," he asked? He went on to indicate that he'd never do anything like that - he might embarrass himself, or worse yet, lose. "Do you think about those things," he asked? Of course I do. However, I went on to explain that the competition isn't about being better than someone else or even winning a trophy (in this case, a sword!). Competition is always, at least for me, about fighting the demons within. It's about becoming the very best that I can be, despite the obstacles, "haters", or my own insecurities. You see, nothing significant ever comes without a challenge or a good dose of fear. If fear is absent, you're resting on some false sense of security; i.e., a "guarantee". And friends, there aren't many guarantees these days, at least in my world.
I'm facing my fear, head-on and won't back down. I'm not worried about April - I'll be ready. In fact, I'll have already won!

Better days!

Although I no longer live them, I remember the days when I prayed at night - that God would take me in my sleep and save me from the misery that had become my life. When the prayers didn't work, I'd often think about ways to put a bullet in my head or run my car off the ravine. I had ruined everything, or so I thought, and alienated those that had loved me. It came to a head about 14 years ago when I had drawn the blinds and seriously contemplated suicide. Long story short - I didn't, and here I am, at least for now (and with no plans to leave anytime soon!)

My life is different now. I've grown older, and I think, a bit wiser. I've recognized, and appreciate, the value of my life and the fact that it can be snatched away in an instant. I'm here, but my life (Blink!) can be OVER in an INSTANT! I've lost my little sister to a car accident (age 24), my best friend to sinus cancer (age 47), opened a Sunday paper one morning to discover that my training partner had lost his wife (early 20's), and his daughter (age 4) in a car accident. My daughter, soon to be 18, rolled her jeep last February. However, she walked away with a bruised finger. You can't imagine how grateful I am for that outcome. I KNOW that it could have been much, much, different! Life can end, quickly, for all of us!

I think it's true that the older you get, the more you appreciate the remaining days. I'm not trying to be overly dramatic here, but my days pass too quickly. Eerily so! My kids are grown, I'll turn 50 in April, and it won't be too many years (bar any surprises), that I'll have grandchildren! If the next thirty years pass as quickly as the past thirty have, I'll be the ripe-old age of 80, soon! How does that happen? More importantly, why have so many lost their smiles and the appreciation for a new day? Every breath that we're given is a new beginning, but we have to look beyond what we don't have and embrace the things that we do! Hugging a child, "dating" a spouse, laughing, dancing ( I can still bust a move!), a walk through nature, the ability to move, hear, see , think, and love - just enjoying LIFE - those are the things that bring true value and purpose to who we are, not the superficial pulse materialism.

Before you do anything else today, take a MOMENT to think about what you DO have. Draw in a breath of fresh air, number your blessings, and smile - you're ALIVE and things can always get better!

Is it the RIGHT opportunity?

Success = opportunity + preparation. That's what I used to believe, but my thoughts have changed. I don't agree that every opportunity is a good one. In fact, I think it's always best to assess all opportunity. When we consider opportunity, we have to consider the cost behind it. In other words, whatever I choose to do has a subsequent consequence. If I choose to work at one job, I've chosen not to work at another. If I've chosen to buy one car, I'll be leaving another on the lot. If I've chosen to watch television, I've chosen not to read. The list goes on and on. Align your best choices with your overall vision. Do the choices you make carry you closer to your vision, create stagnation, or carry you away from it? If you're not moving toward your vision, you're staying closer to your reality. Success = ASSESSED opportunity + preparation.

I shouldn't, but I will!

I've heard that there are two things you should never debate, Politics and Religion. I won't write about the first, at least today, but I will tackle the second. I'm not interested in a debate, nor an argument, so don't bother. I don't care if you call me a heretic, a sinner, or spiritually immature. Honestly, I REALLY don't care, especially these days. Am I an evil man? Absolutely not. In fact, at 6'2.5" and 250 lbs., I'm actually more of a giant teddy bear. Am I a religious man? Nope. I HATE religion. I think it ruins people. Period. I am, however, a spiritual man. Very spiritual. I'm on a daily journey to discover who I am in the midst of a God loves me unconditionally. I did catch that part, but eventually let go of all the legalistic crap. Man, I can almost hear the perfect people rising from their chairs to tell me how wrong I am. I'll accept your prayers, but pray for yourself as well. NONE of us are perfect.

I grew up in church. All I can really remember is a bunch of people pretending that they don't have any sin in their lives, acting as if they completely understand God and are individually entitled to His mercy and grace. But then again, that was a message that I repeatedly heard from the pulpit. His mercy and grace are available to all, just for the asking. Young man, it doesn't matter what you've done, God has a deep-deep interest in you and will wipe your evil slate clean. I really hoped for that, and needed it, desperately. I still need it, on a DAILY basis. I am weak as a human. And I am human, VERY human. I embrace God's mercy and grace with all I am, and all I have. It's the very hope that keeps my heart beating. You see, without hope, I have nothing.

Here's my point. You can gather at a church and fellowship all you want, but people are really hurting, everywhere - and it's a BIG TIME HURT. Those that pretend to have it all together probably have the deepest struggles. How can anyone internalize the deeper and darker challenges of life and be healthy? Well, you say, I attend a church. Ok, but can you tell anyone at your church how deeply your wounds run, detail the depth of your temptation, or process the unhealthy thoughts that consistently ruin your life? If you can, count your blessings. I think your situation is rare.

I recently had lunch with a friend who mentioned that his church was finally "ministering" beyond the confines of its four walls. This closing statement? " I never thought I'd live long enough to see that happen!" He's 61 years old and one of the finest men that I have ever met. His statement, however, revealed a deeper truth and, in my opinion, is a reflection of a troubling trend. Most churches aren't active in the community, at least in good-ol' Midwest Indiana. What about the homeless people, the inmates facing release, the teenage mother, the recovering alcoholic or drug addict, the newly divorced couple, the minority, the whore, the rapist, the murderer, the child-molester, the corrupt businessman? Where do they go when they want to pull their lives together? Your church? Oh yea, I forgot- you'll wish them well and pray for them. You're right, I don't understand the potential conflicts and dangers. Oh wait, someone might become angry that "those" people are allowed to worship at your church. Jake, it might even impact our offering! Well then, we certainly can't have that, can we! Please tell me, for I need to know, where can they SAFELY go, for unconditional help, love, and support?

A supervisor once called me "blue-collar". The statement, however, was positioned as an insult. I eventually found out that his statement referenced my ability to "connect" with those less-fortunate that myself. Somehow I was supposed to be above that? Why? Yes, his statement was offensive, but I'll rest my case on the underlying principle. My heritage is "blue-collar". My grandfather was a railroad man. My father was a factory worker and a restaurant/bar owner. At one point in my life, I inspected septic systems for a living. I certainly don't do that today, but that doesn't make me better than anyone else. In fact, it keeps me humble. My point? I think that we need to get back to a "blue-collar" perspective that represents the best of who we are and what we have to offer, even in the "church". Hard work, discipline, a sense of "community". Whatever happened to really caring about someone, regardless of how their life started, their level of dysfunction, what they drive, of where they live? What happened to the churches that were a hospital for the sick and not a hotel for the perfect? What happened to the grace and mercy that was freely extended to you? and me!? Tell me. Somebody tell me! Why do we sometimes fail to extend grace and mercy, with no expectation of return? Why do we think that "our" church, of maybe 200 people, or even 10,000, is the only church that's wise enough to make it to Heaven? Why is there so much denominational hatred and refute? Why is it that in 2012, churches are still divided by ethnicity. The "black" church, the "white" church, the "Hispanic" church? Seriously?! I really don't understand! As the saying goes, "Why can't we all just get along?"

Perhaps this is coming across as a rant, or some form of self-serving righteousness. It might be perceived that way, and that's fine. But it's not. Those that really know me appreciate my heart, and my candor. I hope you can.

I'm just confused, and really believe, that until we can set aside our hatred and venom for those that are different than us, even in a religious setting, our hope, as a unified society, is gone. If things don't change, we'll only continue to implode on ourselves.

It's the essence of our brightest humanity that will keep us alive and allow us to prosper. God is big, but I think that He's much BIGGER than we can ever comprehend or give Him credit for. It's my sincerest hope that the world will one day shine as a reflection of all that is good within us. I hope that my children, my wife, and my yet to be born grandchildren, will eventually live in a world that's measured by its love and not its evil. I want, so much, to be a part of that legacy and hope that you do as well. It's a very long journey, but distant travel always begins with a first step. I'll take one today. The question is often whether or not we have the courage toexercise it. You see, leadership is about making a difference. Mother's (andfather's) exercise it, Clergy exercises it, so does the neighborhood watchleader, the hospital volunteer, the teacher, the basketball coach, the schoolcounselor, the animal advocate, the little 'ol church lady who shares herwisdom...the list goes on, and on, and on! Do people take notice when youspeak? If so, pay attention! Can you bring about peace or re-direct the effortsof someone in the midst of crisis? If so, pay attention! Do people gatheraround you to listen to stories of years gone by, wanting to know how youbecame the person you are today? If so, pay attention! Your efforts aren'tgoing to waste. they're making a difference. And that, my friend, isleadership! ~ Jake Gamble

Consider this statement!

"Sociologists say that even introverted people will influence an averageof 10,000 people in their lifetime. Just think about that! Someone who's noteven trying to lead others will impact many. Just think about what one personcan do if he or she is intentional about leading....." John C. I enjoy it. I sang for a lot of years. First, as a hopeful Country Music star. Hey, I even auditioned for Nashville, TN. "You Can Be a Star" many years ago. I also sang on the Illinois Opry. I eventually finished my "career" as a church soloist. I won a few contests, have a few trophies, and often heard that I was talented, or "gifted", but not the AI kind of talent! Those kids are big-time awesome!! Well, some of them are. Some of the hopefuls make me cry. Almost. It's THAT bad! Others make me wiggle in my chair as they hit their mind-altering, glass-breaking, panic-causing, ear-covering, dream-ending high notes that make a human want to become an animal and run for the woods! I once heard that there a no wrong notes - only the right notes in the wrong places. How does someone completely figure that out!? Why hasn't someone told them how bad they really are? Are their friends and family tone deaf, too? Doesn't someone care enough to shade them from national embarrassment, ridicule, and AI playbacks? My guess is that some of the people in the wings do, and they're absolutely sure of the negative outcome. However, their feedback never registered. Sometimes we make the decision to follow a dream when we really don't have what it takes. It doesn't matter what people think, say, or do, we're moving forward, convinced that a positive mental attitude or some time, training, or energy will "fix" the problem. We're wrong. We don't have what it takes, and we never will. It's about being honest with ourselves and realizing that our dream would serve us better as a hobby.

There is something else, deep within us, that is our true calling. Everything lines up and we'll find our groove, if we're willing to explore our true strengths. Forward in strength, manage weakness. Forward in strength, manage weakness. Say that to yourself and LISTEN for the answer. It's in there, sometimes hidden behind layers and layers of false hope, justification, or rationalization. What are you really good at? What really feeds your soul and positively impacts others? And yes, if given the chance, what would you do daily, for FREE, and not think twice about it? Don't chase money. Chase your passion and the essence of who YOU really are. But be HONEST with yourself. Do what you do best, and stay in your strength zone. At that point, even Jennifer Lopez would be impressed. And that, my friends, would be worth the trip!

Ready, aim, fire!

Whether you move to the left or the right, up or down, or sideways, it's coming! You can walk, crawl, hip, hop, skip, slide, or run, but it's coming! You can whisper, holler, talk, scream, grunt, or even remain silent, but it's coming! You can attempt to avoid it, move around it, go over it, under it, around it, or through it, but it's coming! In think you get my point. It comes like a thief in the night and can rob you of everything you've worked for, believe in, and are striving to become. It can silence you to the point where, for most practical purposes, you longer live, but exist. It can be an opponent that you've never, ever, faced before - cunning, manipulative, destructive. Some might call it a demon, a persistent adversary that targets the very essence of all that's good in your life. If you're not careful, it might even darken your very soul. If you haven't caught on, I'm talking about CRITICISM. It will come, regardless of what you're doing, who you are, where you belong, or your sincerest intent. Well, unless you're a reality-based, television watching, couch potato or someone that lives deep within the Amazon forest, either of which could removes you from the "life" map.

Whether you like it or not, someone will always have something to say. Worse yet, they might even call you "controversial!" In my opinion, that just means that you've said, or done, something that someone disagrees with. So what! I absolutely ABHOR that statement and think it should be banned from the media waves! However, that's my opinion. I would expect some to accept it and others to resist it, but I certainly don't expect everyone to abide by it! Who am I to call the shots for everyone else on the planet? Now don't get me wrong. I'm certainly not someone who accepts all criticism and reverts to the fetal position. In fact, I'm known for being just the opposite. It is, however, about maintaining a proper perspective. Some people like what I say, others don't. Period.

I've never learned how to avoid criticism, but I'm constantly learning how to deal with. It's not easy to do, but I work at it, especially when I'm doing what I do for all the right reasons. Take this blog, for example.
As I write more and continue to gain additional followers, someone, somewhere, will begin to pick apart what I'm saying or have said. It just goes with the territory, and I knew that from day one. However, how I respond or whether I choose to respond is my decision. I'm not going to let someone that I probably don't know, and someone that certainly doesn't know ME, rob me of who I am and what I stand for. It just won't happen. My primary response is to thank someone for their opinion and move on. From that point on, the ball is back in their court - they can hang on or let go, but I'm no longer in that game! Movin' on. End of story!

If you're not strong enough to stand in the midst of criticism, find the nearest closet. Take a blanket, shut the lights off, and stay there. If you're not comfortable with that, maybe you could start an ant farm!
I once heard that in order to avoid criticism, you have to say nothing, be nothing, and do nothing. That's not ME, and I certainly hope it's not YOU! Stand up, get strong, and move forward - the world is looking forward to the best of what you have to offer!

Dog Years

Many say that a dog is man's best friend. I would have to agree. When my daughter was seven years old, a woman knocked on our door. She was holding a small box. It was my daughters birthday, and little did she know - the box was full of life. Newborn puppy life! If I remember correctly, there were probably about six of them. All whimpering, with their eyes barely open. My daughter was allowed to select one and she gravitated toward the smallest one of the bunch. At that moment, that little ball of fur became part of our family. Sweet-Pea, half Shitzu and half Cocker Spaniel, is now referred to as MY dog. As our kids grew older, they seemingly lost interest in the care and nurture of Sweet-Pea. However, I have a lot of fun with her. She always greets met at the door, wags her tail when she sees me, sits on my lap in the car, gets "scrappy" when I want her to, and still has plenty of "kiss-kisses" for the old man. And best of all, she doesn't complain! (LOL, I just HAD to get that in there!) Sweet-Pea will soon turn eleven. She's still quick and feisty, but I've noticed that she does a lot of stretching these days. Her hair, at least when it grows out, is mostly gray. Her shape has changed a bit, and her bikini body of the past, is gone. Hey, and except for the bikini body, that sounds like me!

Yesterday, I was putting some animal lotion on my dog and coaxed her into position with a treat. I tossed the animal snack her way and didn't think much of it, until I heard this horrible, never before heard, noise coming from her throat. Sweet-Pea had swallowed the treat, whole, and it had blocked her airway. She was choking, severely, right in front of me. I panicked, and began to massage her neck. I also put my finger down her throat and could feel the treat - it was lodged firmly, in the wrong place. When I removed my finger, the Sweet-Pea quickly broke my grasp and was headed for the door. Instinctively, she wanted to be outside. I was really worried. Despite my calls, she headed toward the back of the property. I soon noticed her slumping over and vomiting, with an ever-so-strange white foam coming from her mouth! Should I call the Vet? Is she going to die, right in front of me? To my pleasure, she looked my way and headed back to the house, tail wagging. She was fine. Her vomiting had dislodged the animal treat. Even as I write this, I have tears in my eyes. That dog means a LOT to me!

The situation reminded me of something extremely important. The little things that Sweet-Pea has done, over the years, have impacted my life - I really, really am attached to that little dog. However, in a few years, or maybe sooner, I'll have to say goodbye. My day will come as well, and I know, that there are those that love me. They will shed tears and draw on memories past. I hope my life allows them to enjoy the journey. Well, that's my plan, and I'll make sure to concentrate on the "little things" along the way! The "little things", I've learned, make a big, BIG difference!

Ouch!

Relationships are a difficult part of life. We're designed for them, or at least that's what the "experts" tell us. However, it's important to recognize that some are good for us and some are not. In other words, some bring pleasure and some bring pain, discomfort, and sometimes, downright evil. When relationships are destructive or bring danger and/or dysfunction to our lives, I believe that it's necessary to heed the warnings and leave the danger zone, sometimes for good. Yes, pain and discomfort can be good for us. They tell us that somethings wrong and that we need to make an adjustment - sometimes counseling or effective problem resolution can bring healing. I'm not referring to those cases. I'm referring to the relationships that contribute to the compromise of who we are, what we believe, and what we have to offer. I'm talking about the relationships that destroy us from the inside out, those that corrode our hearts, minds, and spirits with the equivalent of a destructive chemical agent. The challenge to remove those relationships, however, is not easy! Sometimes, and probably most often, the most destructive relationships are the ones that are closest to us; our friends, family, our boss, our favorite social group, or worse yet, maybe even that church "fellowship". (Yeah, I said it!)

The next time you're at your desk, take a notepad and draw a line right down the middle. On the right side, and at the top, label one column, "Healthy" and the other side, "Unhealthy." Now, start listing names in each category, and be COMPLETELY honest with yourself! After all, nobody should ever see the list except you, or perhaps, someone that is "safe", and trustworthy. Now ask yourself one very important question, "Why?" - ask it over, and over, and over again. Why is their so much dysfunction in my life? Why do I allow it? Why can't I end a destructive relationship? Why do I tolerate, or even allow, people to abuse me - physically or emotionally? Why do I think and act the way I do? Why am I so self-destructive? Why? Why? Why? Be forewarned! Those questions can lead to some deep, dark, dirty, ugly, emotional pain. In all honesty, the scope of resolving those issues is far beyond my relationship expertise or the depth of my blog. However, as painful as the journey to resolution might be, it's worth the travel. How do I know? I crawled it! and it eventually changed the quality of my life. I couldn't be better, or happier, and that, my friends, was a long time a-comin! You might need some professional help to deal with your issues. Hey, there aint' no shame in that game! Do whatever it takes to get better. YOU are worth it!

The power source was bad!

Yesterday was just another day, until I tried to start my car! It wouldn't turn over. Nothing. Automobile issues scare me. You see, aside from an oil change, checking the tires, fixing a flat, or putting gas is a vehicle, I know absolutely nothing about the overall function of cars. (It'll probably show in this note!) Oh, I forgot. I also know how to use jumper cables. Long story short. My father-in-law lives just a few minutes away and knows how to fix anything. As a retired Millwright, he can do everything that I can't. He agreed to come over and help. While I was waiting, I popped the hood. Ouch! Even I could see what was wrong. The connector to the power source was completely corroded. In fact, it was a nasty, bubble-frosted, lime green. Seconds later, Joe pulled into the driveway. His response was that it was much worse than I had thought. In fact, it was so bad that when all was said and done, the "connector thing" (I told you!) had to be replaced. The battery acid had been doing its work for far too long. That car wasn't going anywhere for a while, or at least until Joe could work his magic. He did, and an hour or so later, I was off to the races. By the way, the "connector thing" was only $5! Joe IS a magician!

Keep an eye on your power source and when it's corroded, address the issue. You can draw your strength from a variety of sources; i.e., religion, podcasts, music, books, etc., but make sure the connection is strong. If not, get some help or replace it! You'll be back-to-business in no time!

Keep out!

It's Saturday, and many of you have heard that all too familiar sound for almost a week. * Beep *Beep *Beep! - it's that dump truck again, backing right onto the property of your life! It's happened to all of us at one time or other. Here comes the trash and someone in your life is carrying it. Maybe it's your boss or worse yet, a parent, child, or significant other. It doesn't matter. The trash is heavy and they're looking to dump it, on you! And you let them in! Imagine that you're sitting at home and they've all arrived. They enter your living room and begin the unload - maybe some eggshells, certainly a few milk cartons, some old newspapers, a few chicken bones, a couple of empty jars, some paper, the remainder of last nights dinner, and oh, that shasta nasty poop-filled diaper. You don't say a thing! You're used to it. That's just the way it is, or so you reason. You know that you should stop it, but for some reason, you don't. That's hard to understand, but maybe it's your guilt or shame? A sense of obligation? Oh, I know. They're more "successful" than you are, and you just don't have the right to say anything? Ok, I see. You "owe" them something? No? Ok, so you're not as good-looking, as talented, as thin, or as outgoing as they are? Ok, I stand corrected and should've known. You're "nice", and you don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. Well, that makes sense! Yeah, you're responsible for the health and well-being of the other six billion people on the planet. Their feelings and life issues, psychosis, and self-centeredness are yours to accept, process, and nurture? After all, you've posted the "welcome" sign. Hell, they don't even have to take their shoes off!

I'm ridiculous? Sometimes, but please take some time to think about what I've written. How many times have (we!) allowed someone to ridicule, demean, or even attempt to destroy us? And we think, for some dysfunctional reason, that we should allow it. We accept the pain as if it's something placed on the morning breakfast table. Not any more. It's time to move forward!

You are a human being gifted with something that's uniquely you. Even your voice print is solely yours, something that nobody else, in the entire Universe, possesses. It's time to realize your potential, your strength, and your unlimited value. Do whatever it takes to get there! Find the courage to post the "Keep out!" sign, and leave it there! The quality of YOUR life depends on it!

The death of procrastination?

Action is the death of procrastination! However, procrastination comes much easier. When I resurrected my blog over a week ago, I'd made a decision that I would write something every day, come hell or high water. Until today, it had been relatively easy. I'd wake up in the morning, let my mind wander (I have ADD - that happens a lot!), turn on the ol' computer, and write about one of the tra-zillion things running through my mind. Yeah, that's a word - at least in my vocabulary. Hey, there's that damned bird again! Anyhow, this morning was a bit different. I'm still a bit tired and feel like I've been hit by a truck. Instead of getting out of bed and approaching my computer, a nagging thought was to do it later, maybe this evening. Ah, but that's very dangerous for me. It reminds me of the time I was working out in the morning, many years ago. For about three months, I'd head to the gym at about 6 a.m. , get a full workout in, shower, and head to work. It was invigorating. When was the last time I did that? Oh, about 16 years ago. I never missed a morning until I missed that first one. In haven't trained in the morning since! So, I decided to write something. After all, it's better than nothing. If you're not sure what to do, do something. Anything less, and you might cap your progress for good!

Hey, it's dark in here!

The next time you walk into a room and turn off the lights, pause for a moment. Turn the lights on again, and then off again. Pause and think. On again, off again. Pause. Did you notice how quickly the "darkness" overcomes the light? Think about that darkness for a moment, and how "empty" it is. There's a message there! The darkness in our lives is just an instant away. Whether it's an addiction, negativity, anger, apathy, procrastination, a bad attitude, etc., the darkness is very, very close and it can cover, silence, and obliterate anything positive, just - Like - THAT! (finger snap). THINK about what you're going to do today and how you'll approach your plans and the people involved in them. We're taught from an early age that an education is the key to our success. Well, that's partly correct. If it wasn't for teaching, I wouldn't be employed at all right now. And beyond that, I love what I do. I am very blessed and education certainly "cracked" the door. However, I've also become painfully aware that a traditional education, even a higher-level one (I have a Master's Degree), doesn't guarantee a career. In fact, it doesn't even guarantee a job. At best, it offers a chance to be more visible than the next person.

High School doesn't teach us to succeed, it only attempts to help us become a well-behaved employee robot. Report to work on time, don't ask questions, and do what you're told. If you're lucky enough, we'll give you some affordable insurance and a day off here and there. That's bullshit. An "education" would teach us how to effectively start, operate, and maximize the potential of our own small business. It would also teach us how to manage our money effectively, understand the difference between a stock and a bond, invest for a high return, discern the complicated aspects of personal and professional insurance, and maximize the deductions on our out-of-control tax returns. But it doesn't. In fact, it doesn't even come close. Why, exactly, is that? Control of resources? Hmmmm! Much of America is left to feed on scraps, making money and providing a comfortable living for someone that's fortunate enough to "own" the process. More bullshit! Hey, it's starting to stink in here!

I'm not slamming a JOB and I'm not slamming employers. I have had, and will continue to have, both. What I'm saying is that we need to wake up and take responsibility for the ultimate outcome of our own lives.
You're trusting the government? After years and years and years and YEARS of overspending, increased taxes, and downright manipulation of the general public, you trust the government? Well, to each his own.
A good portion of America is unhappy with Obama because he hasn't "fixed" everything and made their lives easier. I don't think he ever will, or the next president, or the one after that. Now, I'm not an Economist or a Rocket Scientist, but I'm at least well-schooled in the reality of life, including the ridiculousness of government activity.

We'll all either settle for scraps or we'll work for what we want. And work, especially hard work, sucks! I'm not talking about activity, I'm talking about the relentless pursuit of true stability. Security comes when we do the very best with what we've been given and can fend for ourselves, even in the midst of tremendous hardship. It can certainly be painful, but we have to make the effort to become self-sufficient. I generally meet two types of people in my life - those that have the answers and those that are still learning. I used to be a member of the first group. These days, at almost 50, I'm certainly a part of the second. Hey, that's like discussing Republicans vs. Democrats! Oops, sorry. It's that damned bird again!
Anyhow, I'm a parent of three older teenagers and certainly don't have those answers. By the way, where is THAT instruction manual? The answers to a problem-free marriage? Nope. The answers to all the religious rhetoric? Once again, a solid no! I'm a Business Professor. All of the answers there? Nope, but it's funny that my students expect me to know everything. Well, I know an awful lot, but not everything - that's far beyond the years that I have left! Ok, so what about politics? The politicians can't seem to figure it out, so how would I? So, nope! How about Quantum Theory? Hell no! What's going to happen tomorrow, or even the rest of today? I have plans, but there are absolutely no guarantees. A resounding NOOOO!
I've embraced the fact that I don't know everything and actually enjoy that journey. It gives me something to look forward to. Something that takes me beyond myself and exposes me to new ideas and new people, new challenges and new accomplishment. Sometimes it helps me understand, to a greater extent, who I am. I'm talking about the depth of being ME! I've grown comfortable in being human and not the great pretender. It's really refreshing, and if you haven't tried it, I'd encourage you to do so. Have a great day!

Are you a "girly man?"

Martin Luther King, Jr. is reverenced by some and hated by others, even today. Although the government has honored this day, and the MLK legacy, not everyone does. One school system in the area is shut down for observance of the MLK holiday, another is business as usual. Interesting. Now, I'm not going to say that I know everything about MLK. I don't, and I certainly can't quote the MLK "I Have a Dream" speech by memory, but I have a friend who can. In fact, Larry does it every year for churches and anyone else that'll listen. He knows every single word and attempts to offer the speech with the same voice reflection and passion as MLK did. It's quite powerful!
One of the things I admire most about MLK, and anyone like him, was his boldness. I fully respect anyone who will stand by his values and lead a cause, especially in the midst of great opposition - even if I disagree!
We don't have enough of that today. In my opinion, society and leadership have given way to "girly men"! (Thanks, Arnold!) I find it amazing that we EXPECT our politicians and leaders to lie to us. In fact, I think we expect MOST people to lie to us! And then we're stupid enough to tolerate it! Some of us move beyond that and walk on eggshells, afraid to tackle issues head-on, and we're certainly afraid of being punished, ridiculed, or ostracized for saying what's really on our minds. A "politically correct" society won't allow it. It appears that few will stand, strongly, for anything greater than themselves - that's incredibly pathetic!

True change will come when we embrace the boldness necessary for positive progress. However, those of us that choose that route WILL pay a hefty price. MLK, Abraham Lincoln, JFK, among others, paid with their lives! Your influence may come with consequences as well. Can you deal with it?

Have you set a BHAG?

A BHAG is a Big Hairy Audacious Goal, a term coined by Jim Collins, business author extraordinaire! I set one in May of 2011 - to be in the best shape of my life by my 50th birthday, on April 15th, 2012. Well, that sounds easy. Just lose some weight, drop a clothes size or two, eat a little bit better. Yes, that would certainly improve my health and overall appearance, but it wouldn't allow me to be in the BEST shape of my life. It wouldn't even get me close. You see, I was a bodybuilder in my 20's and early 30's, I even competed. I also obtained a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do at the age of 32. Neither of those two accomplishments were the result of anything less than EXCEPTIONAL physical, and mental, health! Well, I never really quit working out but I was certainly in denial of how I really looked. I had been that way for years, somehow thinking that I still retained the physical appearance of my younger days. I could certainly lift a lot of weight and I thought that was enough to maintain my health. The power of the mind, and the denial that can flow through it, is amazing. The turning point? As a business owner, I attended a professional workshop in Indianapolis, IN. On the day of the workshop, and only that day, the elevator that would carry my heavy butt to the presentation was broken. The solution? I had to climb 5! friggin' flights of stairs! By the time I got to the top, I was sweating and breathing heavily. In fact, I was afraid, honestly afraid. I couldn't get my breathing under control and thought I was having a heart attack. On a 6'2.5" frame, I was carrying 279 lbs. and it was destroying me, and my confidence as well. It took me about 25 minutes to feel my fat, "normal" again. However, that experience changed me! At this moment, I weigh 253 lbs., an OFFICIAL 20 lb. weight loss! I am lighter, and feel better, than I have in many years. However, that does NOT get me in the best shape of my life, and that's the promise that I made to myself. So, how do I keep going? I set that BHAG and a big one! I KNEW that it would force me to commit, fully, to my health plan. What is it? I've chosen to compete in a bodybuilding contest on the day BEFORE my 50th birthday. On April 14th, 2012, I will compete in the NPC Natural Indiana in Indianapolis, IN. (Master's Division). All of my effort, what I do and what I don't do, will be a reflection of my commitment, and my entire physique will on display for everyone in attendance to see. Am I afraid? Sometimes. Will I embarrass myself? I don't plan to, but the chance is always there. Will I win? There are absolutely no guarantees that I'll even come close. But it's not about that. I'm not competing against anyone else. I'm competing against myself and my old habits, my fear of failure, and my apathy towards the BIGGER CHALLENGES of life.. The journey, however, has been good for me. Although I'm well into middle-age and somewhat on the sunset side of it, my body is responding well and my mind is strong. Heck, I'm even doing cardio and eating egg whites these days! Interestingly enough, the discipline has spilled over into areas of my life; business, finances, relationships, etc.
Have you set your own BHAG? Do it, and watch your world begin to change for the better! If I can do it, so can you! Go for it and don't look back!

The Power of Commitment

I've been in local gyms for a long, long time. At this time of the year, the parking lot can get pretty busy. Lots of new faces along with their new equipment. Matching outfits, new perfume in the air (shasta nasty!), weights clanging, machines moving, a scream or a grunt every now and then, workout gloves, weight belts, special sport drink containers, work-out journals, and even iPads have made their way into the Health Club frenzy. However, there are us old-time iron warriors and fitness fanatics that know the routine. By the end of January, or early February, almost all of the "newbies" will be gone. It happens every year, without fail! Why? Because nothing good comes easy! There's no quick-fix exercise routine or magic treadmill that will take that extra weight off of you (or me!). There's not bodybuilding program or certain number of sets and reps that will create that Arnold physique. Nothing! Well, nothing except plain 'ol hard work; day, after day, after day, after day. I feel sorry for our local trainer. Sometimes, the whining, complaining, excuses and downright bitching that he hears when he's trying to help people can drive even the most empathetic and patient person NUTS! It certainly drives me nuts as it competes against the thumping background music. Winners make commitments, losers make excuses! Whether its fitness, business, or "life", remember that it's the little efforts, repeated consistently, that make the biggest difference. It's a compound effect. Now, I have things to do and places to be. I'm going after what I want and am committed to the necessary effort(s)! Care to join me?

The Standstill

I live in Indiana and winter is definitely here! As I type, it's 14 degrees with a windchill far below that. I'm at home waiting to see if my youngest son has school today. As of right now, he's on a two hour delay. If that changes, I'll venture onto the State Roads with the rest of the slower traffic. The wind is howling and the snow is beginning to drift. It's obviously not my favorite time of the year!

Life seems that way sometimes. Whether it's promoting my company, staying positive, or keeping the weight off, I tend to hit a plateau. I'll be moving forward, and BAM!, everything comes to a grinding halt. Most of the time, it's unexpected. All of the sudden, here comes the shasta nasty.

The best thing about winter is spring! I know that the warm weather will eventually come. Sometimes, or so it seems, I can get into a analytic funk that keeps me from moving anywhere but sideways. I've heard about the Scarcity vs. the Abundance mindset. I've also heard about the Fixed vs. the Growth mindset. The bottom line is this. We either move forward or we don't, there is no trying. We can blame the government, our parents, or neighbors, our spouse, etc., it really doesn't matter. I believe that we don't see the world as it is, but as we think it is, or as we think it should be. However, we're not always right. In Psychology, they call that "Cognitive Distortion". I have to constantly guard my mind against false perceptions, and so should you. If you see the world as being full of possibility, with an place for you, you've got a chance. If you see the world as a confined, oppressive force that'll never give you an opportunity, you won't find one. Every forty-five minutes or so, I'll take a break and wander through the building. I'll take a few minutes to check for new audio books, take a glance at the available movies, or look at the CD selection. Those areas are pretty popular. The computer lab is always full, but it's odd......when I do pass by and notice a screen, most people appear to be surfing the net or playing computer games. The library is louder than it used to be. People talk in full voice and you'll always hear at least one cell phone ring. I go to the library to get away from the noise at home and find that I have to secure a study room. It's about the only place that's quiet, IN THE LIBRARY! Whatever happened to the library of the past, a place to study and learn? I love books and have learned so much from them. In fact, they have changed my life. I can go anywhere I want to and dream from page to page. I can gain insights from those that have been more successful than me and learn from others that have made mistakes that I want to avoid.
